In a significant push to bolster the indigenous defence manufacturing base, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has transferred the technology of nine strategically important systems to various industries. This move aligns with the government's vision of creating a self-reliant and robust defence industrial ecosystem, fostering participation from both public and private sectors.

The Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), a key DRDO laboratory based in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, spearheaded this initiative. Licensing agreements were officially handed over to representatives from ten different industrial houses during a ceremony held at VRDE on June 7, 2025. The event was graced by the presence of Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman, DRDO, Dr Samir V Kamat.

The technologies transferred encompass a diverse range of defence systems, each designed to enhance the nation's security capabilities. Among them is the "Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear (CBRN) Recce Vehicle (Tracked) Mk-II," a crucial asset for detecting and responding to CBRN threats, which has been licensed to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). BEL also received the technology for the Expandable Mobile Shelter.

Other notable transfers include the technology for the "Mounted Gun System," which will be manufactured by Bharat Forge Limited, and the "Anti-Terrorist Vehicle-Tracked Version," to be produced by Metaltech Motor Bodies Private Limited. Furthermore, Dass Hitachi Limited and Goma Engineering Private Limited will jointly manufacture the "Multi-Purpose Decontamination System," essential for decontaminating vehicles, equipment, personnel, and terrain exposed to biological and chemical warfare agents. Tata Advanced Systems Limited received the technology for the "Vajra-Riot Control Vehicle." The Full Trailer of the 70-tonne Tank Transporter for main battle Tank Arjun and Unit Maintenance Vehicle for Arjun tank will be manufactured by BEML Limited, Tata International Vehicle Applications, SDR Auto Private Limited and John Galt International.

In addition to technology transfers, VRDE also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with COEP Technological University, Pune, to foster collaboration in cutting-edge technologies and emerging scientific domains. This partnership aims to synergize the expertise of DRDO and academia, driving innovation in defence technology.

During the event, Dr. Kamat lauded DRDO and the industry for the outstanding performance of indigenous systems during Operation Sindoor, highlighting their effectiveness in real-world scenarios. He also urged the industry to plan for surge capacity, ensuring that production can be rapidly scaled up during times of need. He also emphasized the importance of continuous innovation and investment in research and development to maintain a technological edge. He noted that while manufacturing is essential, the ability to design and develop indigenous systems is crucial for long-term self-reliance and for producing cutting-edge technologies.

These technology transfers represent a significant step towards strengthening India's defence industrial base, reducing reliance on imports, and promoting self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing. By empowering domestic industries with advanced technologies, DRDO is playing a pivotal role in enhancing national security and fostering economic growth.
