The mysterious case of Raja Raghuvanshi's murder, which unfolded during a honeymoon in Meghalaya, took a dramatic turn when his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, surfaced at a roadside dhaba (eatery) in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. In the early hours of Monday, June 9, 2025, Sonam approached Sahil Yadav, the owner of Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway, seeking help.
According to Yadav, Sonam arrived at approximately 1 a.m., visibly distressed and requesting the use of a mobile phone. She explained that her phone had been stolen and that she needed to contact her family urgently. Yadav provided her with his phone, and she made the call. Overcome with emotion, Sonam could barely speak through her tears. Yadav recounted that he also spoke with her family, who requested that he alert the local police to ensure her safety.
After the phone call, Yadav inquired about what had happened. Sonam told him that she and Raja had married in May and had traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. There, she claimed, Raja was killed while trying to protect her from a group of men who attempted to steal her jewelry. She also said that she didn't remember how she reached Uttar Pradesh.
Following this, the police were informed, and Sonam formally surrendered at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur. Amitabh Yash, the Additional Director General (Law and Order) of Uttar Pradesh, confirmed that Sonam was located at Kashi Dhaba. She was initially taken to Sadar Hospital for a medical examination and then housed at a One Stop Centre in Ghazipur.
However, the Meghalaya Police maintain that Sonam's surrender was a result of mounting pressure as the investigation, spanning multiple states, intensified. Meghalaya's Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Dalton P. Marak, stated that she would be brought back to Meghalaya for further interrogation and judicial proceedings.
The circumstances surrounding Raja Raghuvanshi's death remain contested. Raja's body was discovered in a deep gorge near Cherrapunji on June 2, prompting a murder investigation. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced the arrest of three individuals from Madhya Pradesh in connection with the case. The Meghalaya DGP later identified Sonam as the woman who surrendered, deepening suspicions about her involvement in her husband's murder.
Adding another layer to the intrigue, police sources have alleged that Sonam was in a relationship with Raj Singh Kushwaha prior to her marriage and that he is suspected of masterminding the killing. Kushwaha, along with Vishal Singh Chauhan, Aakash Rajput, and Anand, have also been arrested in connection with the case.
Sonam's father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, has vehemently defended his daughter, asserting her innocence and accusing the Meghalaya Police of fabricating the story. He stated that Sonam had reached the dhaba on her own and called her brother, after which the police arrived and took her away. He, along with Raja's family, have requested a CBI inquiry into the matter.
Meanwhile, Raja's brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, stated that the family hadn't been informed by the police. Vipul added that Meghalaya Police has not provided them with the post-mortem report and that he wants the Madhya Pradesh Police or the CBI to take over the case.
As investigations continue across multiple states, the truth behind Raja Raghuvanshi's death and Sonam Raghuvanshi's role remains shrouded in mystery. The case has garnered national attention, with many eagerly awaiting further developments.
