Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi, who also serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, has written to Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora expressing grave concerns regarding the investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a 9-year-old girl in the Dayalpur area of North East Delhi. The incident has sparked outrage and political accusations, with Atishi directly questioning the seriousness and effectiveness of the police investigation.
In her letter, dated Monday, June 9, 2025, Atishi requested an urgent appointment with the Police Commissioner to discuss the matter in detail. She emphasized that the primary accused in the heinous crime remains at large, raising significant doubts about the ongoing police efforts. "The brutal sexual assault and murder of a 9-year-old girl in North East Delhi has once again raised a big question mark on the safety of women and young children in the national capital," Atishi stated in her letter. She conveyed that she met with the victim's family, whose sole demand is justice for their child and strict punishment for the perpetrators.
Atishi highlighted the fear and insecurity prevailing in the Dayalpur area following the incident. "The rapist and murderer of a 9-year-old girl in Nehru Vihar has not been caught. People of the entire area are scared. They are not allowing their girls to go out of the house. Women are unsafe in the entire Delhi," she stated. She also criticized the BJP government, questioning the safety of women under their governance, and demanded accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The AAP leader's letter underscores the growing political storm surrounding the case. Following the incident, AAP has blamed the BJP's "four-engine government" in Delhi for the perceived failure in maintaining law and order. This "four-engine government" refers to the central government, the Delhi police, the Chief Minister, and the Lieutenant Governor, all of which are under BJP purview. Conversely, the BJP has accused AAP of politicizing a tragic event. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva stated that while such crimes are deplorable, reducing them to mere law and order issues is "political cunningness." He further questioned why the AAP government has not launched any awareness campaigns in the past 11 years to prevent crimes against women.
The Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee has also weighed in, with President Devender Yadav criticizing the BJP government for prioritizing the security of the Delhi BJP president over the safety of ordinary citizens. He pointed out that the Delhi Police was quick to enhance the security of the Delhi BJP president to Z-plus category while crime rates continue to rise, endangering the lives of common people.
The horrific rape and murder of the 9-year-old girl has not only triggered a blame game among political parties but has also reignited concerns about the safety and security of women and children in the national capital. Atishi's letter to the Delhi Police Commissioner reflects the urgency and gravity of the situation, demanding swift action and a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the victim and restore public confidence in the ability of law enforcement to protect vulnerable citizens.
