To combat the ever-increasing traffic woes plaguing major Indian cities, the government is exploring innovative and futuristic transportation solutions. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently outlined ambitious plans focusing on aerial pod systems, often dubbed "flying buses," for Delhi and Bengaluru, alongside other initiatives aimed at revolutionizing public transport.

Gadkari revealed that feasibility studies are underway to connect Delhi's Dhaula Kuan to Manesar using an aerial pod system. This Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system envisions small, automated electric vehicles running on elevated tracks, either suspended from above or riding on top. The goal is to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion on this route by offering an alternative mode of transport. A similar study is also being conducted in Bengaluru, indicating the government's intent to explore the viability of such systems in multiple metropolitan areas. These pods would function like on-demand taxis, allowing passengers to summon a pod and travel directly to their destination without intermediate stops, potentially seating two to six people per pod.

Beyond the aerial pod systems, Gadkari highlighted the development of double-decker bus-like systems designed for mountainous regions such as Uttarakhand and Jammu & Kashmir. These buses aim to improve connectivity in challenging terrains, offering a more efficient and accessible mode of public transport for these areas.

In addition to these futuristic projects, the government is also focusing on upgrading existing public transport infrastructure with modern electric buses. Nagpur has already seen the launch of a 135-seater electric bus equipped with executive-class features like individual TVs. This bus utilizes flash-charging technology, allowing for a quick 30-second recharge every 40 kilometers. The intention is to roll out similar electric bus systems on longer intercity routes, including Delhi to Jaipur, Delhi to Dehradun, and Bangalore to Chennai, providing faster and cleaner travel options for commuters.

These initiatives represent a multi-pronged approach to tackling traffic congestion and promoting green mobility across the country. By exploring innovative solutions like aerial pod systems and investing in electric buses, the government aims to create a more efficient, accessible, and sustainable public transport network for the future. The focus is not only on easing traffic but also on reducing pollution and improving the overall quality of life for citizens in urban and mountainous areas alike.
