A chilling detail has emerged in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, placing a phone call made by Sonam Raghuvanshi to her mother-in-law, Uma Raghuvanshi, on the day of Raja Raghuvanshi's death under intense police scrutiny. This call is now a focal point of the investigation, as authorities try to determine if Raja was already dead at the time of the conversation or, even more disturbingly, if he was being led to his death while Sonam calmly spoke to his family.
According to ACP Poonamchand Yadav, the sequence of events provided by the accused indicates that the murder occurred shortly after this particular phone call. "That one call haunts us," he stated, emphasizing its significance. Interrogations have revealed that the murder transpired not long after the phone conversation took place.
The call occurred while the couple was reportedly on their way back after visiting a double-decker bridge in Nongrait village, Shillong. During the conversation, Sonam informed her mother-in-law that she would not break her 'Gyaras' fast despite being away from home. Uma Raghuvanshi then asked to speak with her son, Raja, to which Sonam replied that Raja was walking ahead and his phone was in the bag, assuring her that he would call later. Uma also noted that Sonam was panting during the call, which led her to disconnect.
Uma Raghuvanshi recounted the phone call with a trembling voice, "That was the last time we ever tried to talk to her. I could never have imagined that the daughter-in-law, speaking so gently on the phone, was actually scouting for a spot to kill my son - perhaps even moments away from doing it."
The police are now meticulously analyzing the call's duration, location data, and voice tone, describing it as a moment of "cold-blooded calm before the kill." This analysis aims to uncover further insights into Sonam's state of mind and the events leading up to Raja's murder.
The Meghalaya Police have made a series of arrests in the case, including Sonam Raghuvanshi and her alleged boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, along with three other men: Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi. These individuals are currently being taken to Meghalaya for further investigation and court proceedings.
The investigation has revealed that Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi were married on May 11 and embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya shortly thereafter. However, on May 23, the couple went missing, prompting a widespread search by local authorities. Raja's body was eventually discovered on June 2 in a gorge near Weisawdong Falls in the East Khasi Hills district.
According to police reports, Raj Kushwaha, Sonam's alleged boyfriend, is believed to have conspired with her to commit the crime. He was reportedly in contact with the hired killers for several weeks and provided them with a phone to communicate. Furthermore, call records indicate that Sonam was in contact with Kushwaha during the honeymoon and shared her last location with him before the couple disappeared.
Adding another layer to the shocking details, an eyewitness claimed that Raj Kushwaha even drove a vehicle to transport people to Raja Raghuvanshi's funeral. Lakshman Singh Rathore, who attended the funeral, recognized Kushwaha from media reports after his arrest.
