The breach of privilege proceedings against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra are set to commence soon, as confirmed by a senior official on Saturday, June 14, 2025. This action stems from a parody song Kamra created, which targeted Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The motion was initially raised by BJP legislator Pravin Darekar during the budget session in March. Darekar accused Kamra of employing derogatory language against Shinde in the song, which alluded to Shinde as a "gaddar" or "traitor" in reference to his splitting of the Shiv Sena party, thus allegedly breaching the privilege of the legislature. Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare is also named in the notice.
The legislative council chairperson, Ram Shinde, has officially forwarded the notice to the privilege committee. This committee, headed by BJP MLC Prasad Lad, has already convened to discuss the matter and initiate the process of issuing notices to both Kamra and Andhare. The panel is expected to meet ahead of the monsoon session to decide on the notice to be sent to the comedian, allowing him an opportunity to respond.
Legislature secretary Jitendra Bhole confirmed the forwarding of the notice to the privilege committee. Prasad Lad, when contacted, stated that his committee has already met to deliberate on the breach of privilege notice and has begun the process of issuing notices to Kamra and Andhare.
The issue was also discussed in the legislative assembly after Sena MLA Ramesh Bornare moved a similar motion in the lower house; however, the speaker did not admit the motion. Concerns have also been raised regarding whether Kamra's actions truly obstructed any legislator from performing their duties. The legal cell of the council had presented two options: issue a notice to Kamra or leave the decision to the committee.
Kunal Kamra is known for his often controversial stand-up comedy that doesn't shy away from political satire.
