Delhi residents experienced a welcome respite from the intense heatwave as gusty winds and thunderstorms swept through the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an alert, warning of severe thunderstorms and strong winds, urging people to stay indoors and take necessary precautions.
The change in weather brought much-needed relief after days of scorching temperatures. Several parts of Delhi experienced rainfall, which significantly lowered the temperature and improved the air quality. The IMD reported that a "moderate to intense spell of rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning, and squally winds reaching speeds of 80-100 kmph" affected the capital in the early hours.
Visuals from various areas, including Krishi Bhavan, Rafi Marg, and Udyog Bhawan, showed heavy rain and strong winds lashing the city. Two thundersqualls, accompanied by hailstorm activity, were recorded at Safdarjung. The first squall had gusty winds reaching 82 kmph, while the second saw a peak wind speed of 104 kmph, according to the IMD.
The weather department advised residents to stay indoors and avoid travel unless necessary due to the risks posed by flying debris and low visibility. The severe weather conditions did disrupt early morning traffic, with waterlogging reported in several low-lying areas.
Prior to this welcome change, Delhi had been reeling under intense heat, with several parts of the city recording maximum temperatures of over 43 degrees Celsius. Ayanagar recorded the highest maximum temperature at 45.0°C. The IMD had previously issued a warning that Delhi NCR could experience heatwave-like conditions, with temperatures potentially exceeding 45°C.
The IMD has outlined several precautionary measures for public safety during thunderstorms. Residents are advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Electrical appliances should be unplugged to prevent damage from lightning surges, and people should avoid taking shelter under trees or metal structures during the storm. The use of mobile phones in open areas during lightning is also discouraged. Farmers and outdoor laborers have been urged to suspend field work and seek immediate shelter.
Looking ahead, the IMD forecasts that similar weather conditions with rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are likely to persist over the next few days. While today's maximum temperature is expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius, a gradual decrease is anticipated over the coming week.
