A tragic incident unfolded near Pune as a bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed on Sunday afternoon, June 15, 2025, resulting in at least four fatalities and leaving 51 others injured. The collapse occurred near Kund Mala in Talegaon, a popular tourist destination approximately 30 kilometers from Pune, known for its natural beauty.
Initial reports indicate that the bridge, reportedly around 30 years old and described by local residents as being in a dilapidated condition, gave way under the weight of a large weekend crowd. The structure, an iron bridge constructed around 1995, had allegedly been declared unsafe for use over two years prior to the incident. Warning signs had been placed near the bridge by the Dehu Road Cantonment Board and police, but tourists frequently ignored these warnings, particularly on weekends.
Eyewitness accounts suggest that approximately 100 to 200 people were on the bridge when it collapsed around 4:00 PM, sending many into the river. Swift action was taken by local residents who were the first to respond, rescuing those who were drowning and injured.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were quickly mobilized and arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. Divers and emergency personnel were also on site, working to locate any individuals still missing. As of the latest reports, 38 people have been rescued from the site.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences and announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has stated that a structural audit of all similar bridges in the state will be conducted to prevent future incidents. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar also commented on the incident, noting that the bridge was rusted and the collapse appeared to be caused by the weight of the crowd. He assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted, and strict action would be taken against those responsible for the bridge's lack of upkeep.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Cyprus, spoke with Chief Minister Fadnavis to express his grief and assure all possible assistance in relief measures. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke with the Chief Minister regarding the situation.
District Collector Jitendra Dudi had previously issued prohibitory orders earlier in June, restricting tourist access to water bodies and certain natural sites due to safety concerns related to the monsoon season.
Confusion initially arose regarding responsibility for the bridge's maintenance. Minister of Water Resources Girish Mahajan acknowledged that tenders for the construction of a new bridge had been approved, but the work was delayed due to the ongoing rain.
The incident is a stark reminder of the importance of regular maintenance and safety checks for public infrastructure, especially in areas frequented by tourists.
