The National Conference (NC) is intensifying its efforts to address the perceived "dual power centre" in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and is advocating for the swift restoration of statehood to ensure effective governance. The party argues that the current administrative structure, where power is divided, is detrimental to the region's progress and the well-being of its residents.
Several NC leaders have voiced their concerns regarding the existing power dynamics in J&K. They contend that the "dual power centre" creates confusion and inefficiencies in governance, ultimately hindering the ability of elected representatives to address the needs of the people effectively. NC MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq stated that the dual-power center is not going to favor anyone, thus the restoration of statehood is imperative to redress the grievances of people and ensure jobs and other things to the masses,”
The NC's push for statehood restoration is rooted in the belief that it is essential for empowering the local government and ensuring greater accountability. Party leaders argue that statehood will provide the elected government with the necessary authority and autonomy to make decisions that are in the best interests of the people of J&K.
NC President and former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah has expressed confidence that statehood will be restored. He has stated that the Government of India made a promise to the Supreme Court regarding the restoration of statehood and is expected to honor that commitment.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is also actively engaged in discussions with the central government regarding the restoration of statehood. He met with Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the matter and seek clarity on the Transaction of Business Rules (TBR) in the Union Territory. The absence of clear TBR has reportedly led to confusion among bureaucrats and further exacerbated the issues arising from the "dual power centre." Omar Abdullah has emphasized that a dual power center system is not going to work, especially considering J&K's strategic location bordering China and Pakistan.
The NC is hopeful that the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir will be restored in the upcoming budget session of Parliament. Tanvir Sadiq has stated that the people of J&K should trust the commitments made by the Prime Minister. He also mentioned the Prime Minister’s commitment that the promise of Modi is not false.
The National Conference's stance reflects a broader sentiment among many residents of J&K who believe that statehood is crucial for restoring normalcy and fostering development in the region. The party's efforts to advocate for statehood and address the issue of the "dual power centre" underscore its commitment to ensuring effective governance and empowering the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
