Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the outreach session of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, today, June 16, 2025. This marks a significant moment for India as it engages with world leaders on pressing global issues.
The G7, an informal forum comprising some of the world's most advanced economies—France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, and Canada, along with the European Union—convenes annually to address key global economic and political challenges. India, though not a member, has been consistently invited to the G7 Outreach sessions since 2019, highlighting its growing global stature and the recognition of its role as a major economic and geopolitical actor.
This year's summit is particularly noteworthy as it provides an opportunity for Prime Minister Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, to revitalize India-Canada relations, which have experienced strain in recent years. The meeting is viewed as a key opportunity to exchange views and explore pathways to revive bilateral relations. The Indian diaspora in Canada has expressed optimism that Prime Minister Modi's visit will lead to improved relations between the two countries.
The Outreach Segment of the 51st G7 summit will feature discussions centered around three core themes: "Protecting our communities around the world," "Building energy security and accelerating the digital transition," and "securing the partnerships of the future".
Prime Minister Modi is expected to articulate India's perspective on a range of critical global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues. India has been among the first countries to formulate a national strategy on Artificial Intelligence, which is derived from the mantra "AI. for All". As a founding member and lead chair of the Global Partnership for AI, India is promoting cooperation among all countries.
The Prime Minister may also highlight India's success in leveraging digital technology for public service delivery, and emphasize that technology should be aimed at fostering progress and well-being for all. He is also likely to discuss India's energy transition pathway, which is based on availability, accessibility, affordability and acceptability, and reiterate India's commitment to achieving the target of NET ZERO by 2070.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister is likely to call for giving priority to the concerns of the Global South, in particular Africa. He may recall that it was a matter of honour for India that the African Union was admitted as a permanent member of the G20 under its presidency.
The G7 summit is taking place against a backdrop of escalating global tensions, including the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. These issues are expected to be major points of discussion among the world leaders.
In addition to addressing the Outreach session, Prime Minister Modi is also expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of G-7 countries and other invited outreach countries. These meetings provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss issues of mutual interest.
