Global Stage: PM Modi in Canada for G7 Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently in Canada attending the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, marking his first visit to the country in a decade. He was welcomed by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The summit, which began on June 16, 2025, serves as a platform for discussions on pressing global issues, including energy security, technology, and innovation, with a particular focus on the AI-energy nexus and quantum-related matters. Modi highlighted that India and Canada are looking to mend their strained relationship. Both leaders agreed to appoint new envoys to each other's capitals, signaling a move towards normalized diplomatic relations after recent tensions.

On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi has engaged in several bilateral meetings. Geopolitical Tensions: Trump's Meeting with Pakistan's Army Chief Amidst Middle East Crisis

In Washington, D.C., U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Pakistan's Army Chief, General Syed Asim Munir. The meeting, a closed-door lunch at the White House, occurs amidst rising tensions in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. The timing of the meeting coincides with protests by Pakistani activists, primarily supporters of Imran Khan, who accuse General Munir of human rights abuses. Concerns over Munir's actions in Pakistan are amplified by Trump's escalating rhetoric towards Iran, demanding unconditional surrender amid the regional conflict. Pakistan's support for Iran further complicates the situation. The meeting is expected to cover regional stability, counterterrorism cooperation, and broader security issues. Trump has also claimed that his administration's trade policies were instrumental in brokering a peace deal between India and Pakistan.

Escalating Conflict: Iran-Israel Tensions

Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated dramatically in recent days, with both countries exchanging military strikes. Since June 13, 2025, hundreds of strikes have been exchanged. The conflict has resulted in a rising death toll, with at least 224 fatalities in Iran and 24 in Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserts that Israeli forces are targeting regime targets, while accusing Iran of targeting civilians. Many residents in Tehran are fleeing to safer areas, while air raid sirens continue to sound in Israel, urging citizens to seek shelter. The violence has caused significant damage to residential buildings, power grids, and oil refineries. President Donald Trump has expressed support for a nuclear arms deal and offered to broker an agreement.

Air India in Crisis: Flight Cancellations and Safety Concerns

Air India is currently facing a significant crisis, marked by multiple flight cancellations and heightened safety concerns. Following a recent accident involving flight AI171, which crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers and crew, the airline has been under intense scrutiny. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed Air India to conduct additional safety checks on its fleet. On June 17, 2025, Air India cancelled several international flights due to operational reasons and precautionary aircraft inspections. Affected routes include Ahmedabad to London, Delhi to Paris and more. The airline is extending a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation fees for passengers booked on flights to and from Ahmedabad between June 12-14, 2025.
