The highly anticipated five-match Test series between England and India is set to commence on June 20th at Headingley, Leeds, marking the start of the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy and the beginning of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle for both teams. This series holds particular significance as India embarks on this tour without two of its modern greats, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who retired from the format earlier this year. The responsibility of leading the team falls on the shoulders of Shubman Gill, who will be captaining the side for the first time in Test cricket, with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.
In light of these changes, former India selector Saba Karim has shared his insights on the team composition, particularly focusing on who should fill the crucial No. 4 batting position previously held by Virat Kohli. Karim has suggested that KL Rahul is the ideal candidate for this role. He believes that Rahul possesses the technique and temperament required to succeed in English conditions. Karim highlighted Rahul's ability to "play a dual role," negotiating early setbacks and carrying the innings forward. He also noted Rahul's past success in England and the maturity he has gained over the past year, making him a responsible choice for the team management. While acknowledging that other names like Shubman Gill and Karun Nair have been discussed, Karim remains firm in his belief that Rahul is the best fit.
Karim is also confident about Rishabh Pant's role as vice-captain. He believes Pant's leadership skills will come to the fore, complementing Gill's captaincy. He emphasized that Gill and Pant have played together and can strategize effectively. Karim also mentioned that India has only won thrice in England, first in 1971, then 1986 and 2007, and hopes that this transition can prove fruitful. He also added that even if India doesn't win the series, they can at least draw it.
The England squad also sees some changes, with Chris Woakes returning to the Test side for the first time since December. Brydon Carse is set to make his home Test debut. England has announced their playing XI for the first Test against India. The team includes Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (capt), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir.
The series presents a significant challenge for the young Indian side, aiming to secure their first Test series win in England since 2007. It also offers England an opportunity to assert their dominance at home and gain crucial points in the World Test Championship.
