Karisma Kapoor, a celebrated actress from Bollywood's prominent Kapoor family, married Delhi-based businessman Sunjay Kapur on September 29, 2003. While often described as an arranged marriage, reports suggest friends played a role in setting up the union. The wedding was a lavish Sikh ceremony held at the Kapoor family's ancestral home, Krishna Raj Bungalow, in Mumbai.
However, the marriage, which initially seemed like a "perfect match made in heaven," soon faced difficulties. Cracks began to appear not long after the wedding. In 2014, Karisma and Sunjay filed for divorce through mutual consent; however, the proceedings turned acrimonious when Karisma alleged that Sunjay was not providing adequate financial support.
Following this, both parties engaged in what was described as "mudslinging," publicly airing accusations against each other. Sunjay claimed that Karisma had married him for his money and property. Karisma, on the other hand, made shocking allegations, including claims that Sunjay had pressured her to sleep with his friends and even "auctioned" her off to them.
During the divorce proceedings, Karisma revealed disturbing details about her married life, stating that she "survived domestic violence." She recounted an incident during their honeymoon when Sunjay allegedly quoted her price to his friends and forced her to spend a night with them. She also claimed that Sunjay physically abused her, and she had to hide the wounds with makeup.
Karisma further alleged that Sunjay was still involved with his first wife when they married and that he had a philandering lifestyle. She stated that his mother supported his wrongdoings.
According to reports, Karisma realized that Sunjay had married her for her celebrity status and intended to use her as a "trophy wife" to gain prominence in Delhi's social circles. She recalled an incident before the wedding when Sunjay's father made her mother cry, causing her to consider calling off the wedding.
Karisma's father, Randhir Kapoor, had always been against the marriage. During the divorce, he stated that Sunjay was a "third-class man" with "debauchery in his system" who never cared for his wife. He claimed that Sunjay was giving Karisma "bull***" and living with another woman, a fact known throughout Delhi.
The couple's divorce was finalized in 2016, with Karisma granted custody of their two children, Samaira and Kiaan. Sunjay was allowed visitation rights. Karisma reportedly received a substantial alimony settlement, including Sunjay's father's house in Khar transferred to her name and bonds worth ₹14 crore for the children, generating a monthly interest of around ₹10 lakh.
