The investigation into the honeymoon murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi in Meghalaya has uncovered a significant detail: Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife and prime suspect in the case, was in frequent contact with a person identified as Sanjay Verma in the weeks leading up to the crime. This individual, initially a mystery to investigators, has now been identified as Raj Kushwaha, Sonam's boyfriend and alleged mastermind behind Raja's murder.
According to police records, Sonam Raghuvanshi and Sanjay Verma exchanged a high volume of calls, with some reports indicating over 200 calls between March and April, and others citing 119 calls between March 1 and March 25. These conversations often occurred late at night or in the early morning hours, raising suspicion about the nature of their relationship and the content of their discussions. The calls continued even after Sonam's marriage to Raja, further fueling suspicions of a conspiracy.
Initially, police launched a search operation to locate Sanjay Verma, whose phone number was found to be switched off. However, the investigation soon revealed that "Sanjay Verma" was an alias used by Raj Kushwaha. Kushwaha, a 20-year-old who worked as an accountant in Sonam's family's plywood business in Indore, is now believed to have orchestrated Raja Raghuvanshi's murder with the help of hired hitmen.
Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam married on May 11th in Indore and departed for their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 20th. Just three days later, on May 23rd, Raja was brutally murdered in Sohra, East Khasi Hills district. His body was recovered on June 2nd from a 200-foot-deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls in Cherrapunji.
The investigation revealed that Kushwaha hired three hitmen – Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi – to carry out the murder. Sonam was allegedly present at the scene when the crime occurred. Reports indicate that Raja was attacked with machetes, and Sonam fled the scene after the initial blows, returning only after he had died.
After the murder, Sonam travelled through Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh before returning to Indore. She had allegedly discarded her ‘mangalsutra’ and a ring in a trolley bag at a homestay in Sohra, raising the police's suspicion. Police also suspect she stayed in a flat in Indore for over 10 days after the murder before being apprehended.
Authorities are exploring whether there was a financial motive behind Raja's murder, in addition to the love triangle between Sonam, Raj, and Raja. Police are questioning individuals to ascertain if anyone stood to gain from Raja's death, as he had recently secured a contract.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed and is currently in Indore, conducting inquiries with Sonam's family and Raj Kushwaha's relatives. The police have also recreated the crime scene, taking all five accused – Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi – to the location near Weisawdong Falls where the murder took place.
Sonam's brother, Govind Raghuvanshi, has denied any knowledge of Sanjay Verma. Raj Kushwaha's mother has also claimed to be unaware of her son's involvement in the crime.
