In a harrowing case from Faridabad, Haryana, a woman's life was tragically cut short, and her body was discovered in a 10-foot pit after her in-laws claimed she had run away. The victim, Tannu Kumar, had been married to Arun Singh, a resident of Roshan Nagar, for less than two years. The grim discovery followed weeks of suspicion and a desperate search by Tannu's family.
Tannu's family grew concerned when they couldn't reach her on April 9th. On April 23rd, her in-laws informed them that she had run away from home. Preeti, Tannu's sister, became suspicious and approached the police, but she alleges that no serious action was initially taken.
Hakim, Tannu's father, visited his brother-in-law's residence and noticed a freshly covered pit, raising his suspicions further. Despite his repeated attempts to alert the local police, he claims his concerns were ignored for a significant period.
Local residents corroborated Hakim's suspicions, telling police that Tannu's father-in-law had dug the pit. Finally, authorities excavated the pit on Friday morning and recovered Tannu's remains. The discovery led to the arrest of four of Tannu's in-laws, including her husband, Arun.
Police investigations revealed that Arun Singh and his father arranged for an earthmover to dig the 10-foot pit outside their house on April 23. The following day, they hired a mason to fill it. They then reported Tannu as missing, falsely claiming she was mentally challenged.
Hakim revealed that Tannu had suffered dowry-related harassment, which had forced her to stay at her parents' home for a year after her marriage. Although a community intervention facilitated her return to Faridabad, the problems persisted.
The police have charged four family members at Palla Police Station: Bhoop Singh (Arun's father), Sonia (Arun's mother), Arun Singh, and Kajal (Arun's sister). Bhoop Singh and Arun Singh are currently under police interrogation, and raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining family members. A post-mortem examination was conducted at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, after which Tannu's body was released to her family. This appalling incident highlights the grave consequences of dowry harassment and the importance of swift and thorough police investigation in cases of missing persons, especially when foul play is suspected.
