Rishabh Pant has etched his name in the record books, surpassing MS Dhoni to become the Indian wicketkeeper-batter with the most Test centuries. Pant achieved this milestone on Saturday, June 21, 2025, during the second day of the first Test against England at Headingley. This was Pant's seventh Test century, while Dhoni retired with six.
Pant reached his century in a remarkable fashion, hitting a six off the first ball of the 100th over, bowled by Shoaib Bashir. This was also Pant's first century since September 2024, when he scored 109 against Bangladesh.
Several records were broken during this innings. Pant now holds the record for the most Test centuries by an Indian wicketkeeper, surpassing Dhoni's previous record of six. He also holds the distinction of scoring the most runs for an Asian wicketkeeper in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries, with 1815 runs, surpassing Dhoni's 1731 runs. He has three centuries in England, which is the most for any wicketkeeper-batter.
Former cricketers and experts have lauded Pant's achievement. Sanjay Manjrekar hailed Pant as India's "greatest wicketkeeper-batter ever," praising his aggressive and fearless approach to the game. Sachin Tendulkar complimented Pant's paddle sweep technique. Sunil Gavaskar exclaimed "superb, superb, superb!" from the commentary box as soon as Pant completed his century.
In 44 Tests, Pant has now amassed 3,082 runs at an average of 43.40, including seven centuries and 15 fifties, with a striking strike rate of 73.69. In comparison, MS Dhoni scored 4,876 runs in 90 Tests, with six centuries and 33 fifties at an average of 38.09. While Dhoni remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests, Pant is quickly catching up and is expected to surpass Dhoni's run tally soon.
Pant's journey has been remarkable, marked by his aggressive batting style and his ability to perform under pressure. At only 27, he has already established himself as a key player in the Indian Test team, particularly in overseas conditions. With many years of cricket ahead of him, Pant has the potential to break many more records and become one of the greatest wicketkeeper-batters of all time.
Other Indian wicketkeepers with Test centuries include Wriddhiman Saha (2), Syed Kirmani (2), Farokh Engineer (2), and Nayan Mongia (1).
