On June 21, 2025, an Air India Express flight IX1014, traveling from Delhi (DEL) to Patna (PAT), was diverted to Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi (VNS) due to adverse weather conditions in Patna. The decision was made as a precautionary measure, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew.
According to officials, the weather conditions in Patna were unsuitable for a safe landing. Factors such as heavy rain, strong winds, and poor runway visibility contributed to the decision to reroute the flight. After circling in the air for some time, the pilot was instructed to divert and sought clearance to land in Varanasi.
The Air India Express spokesperson confirmed the diversion, stating that the flight was briefly rerouted to Varanasi due to the adverse weather. Once the weather improved in Patna, the flight resumed its journey and successfully landed in Patna. The airline has expressed regret for any delay caused by these circumstances, which were beyond their control.
The aircraft landed safely at Babatpur Airport in Varanasi at 6:15 PM, bringing relief to the 173 passengers after uncertainty. After waiting for over an hour, the flight departed for its original destination at 7:20 PM once weather conditions improved.
