Suchitra Krishnamoorthi is set to revive her acclaimed play, ‘Drama Queen,’ in an exciting new format. Audible, a leading creator and provider of premium audio storytelling, has announced the launch of ‘Drama Queen - The Musical Play,’ marking India's first audio musical play. This Audible exclusive audiobook brings Krishnamoorthi's bold and deeply personal solo musical to a global audience.
Adapted from her bestselling memoir of the same name, ‘Drama Queen’ is more than just a performance; it’s described as an emotional outpouring that oscillates between laughter and longing. The musical takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride through themes of fame, heartbreak, motherhood, identity, and rediscovery. Previously performed in theaters across India, the play now finds a new life in the audio format, unfolding as a blend of song, secret, and celebration.
The production boasts a powerful voice cast, including Sujata Kumar (as Amma), Suchitra Pillai (as the shrink), and Arif Zakaria (as Pankaj). It also features cameo appearances by Ketan Singh voicing Karan Johar, Suresh Menon voicing Ram Gopal Varma, Nagesh Kukunoor, and Ken Ghosh.
For Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, this release is not just a milestone but a moment of healing and resurrection. She revealed that during the course of ‘Drama Queen’ performances, she lost several family members, including her sister Sujata Kumar, who voices Amma in the show, as well as her parents and beloved pets. After her sister’s passing in 2023, she found it difficult to continue the show and had decided to end it. The offer from Audible served as a "godsend," bringing back her family, her voice, and her memories. She expressed joy that ‘Drama Queen’ can now be heard by anyone, anywhere, overcoming past disappointments of canceled shows due to the pandemic and other delays.
‘Drama Queen’ originally began as a fictionalized memoir published in 2013, reflecting on Suchitra's life after her divorce from filmmaker Shekhar Kapur in 2007. The stage adaptation, directed by Randhir Ranjan Roy, incorporated acting, singing, and painting to portray the journey of a distressed single mother navigating the challenges of middle-class upbringing, societal judgments, and the search for happiness. The play aimed to highlight the double standards that women often face in a patriarchal society.
Shailesh Sawlani, Country Manager - India, Audible, stated that ‘Drama Queen’ exemplifies Audible's commitment to pushing the boundaries of audio storytelling and championing diverse voices. He believes that the musical play, with its emotional depth, humor, and relatability, will offer listeners a new perspective on the modern Indian woman.
Suchitra Krishnamoorthi's career has been diverse, including a successful film debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan, hit music albums, and a marriage to Shekhar Kapur. ‘Drama Queen’ represents a full-circle moment, stripping away the spectacle to reveal the soul. It’s described as a theatre of truth, holding up a mirror to women who juggle roles, experience love, and dare to assert their self-worth.
'Drama Queen - The Musical Play' is now available to Audible members.
