Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced plans to erect a grand statue of his political mentor, Anand Dighe, in Thane. The announcement was made during the 'bhoomi pujan' (ground breaking) ceremony for the renovation of the clock tower at Shivaji Maidan, where the statue will be located. The project includes the construction of a 42-meter-tall statue and various citizen-centric amenities. A budget of Rs 11 crore has already been approved for the work. Shinde has asserted that there will be no shortage of funds when it comes to honoring Dighe.
Anand Chintamani Dighe, also known as Dharmaveer, was a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics and a key leader of the Shiv Sena. Born on January 27, 1951, Dighe dedicated his life to social work and political activism, leaving a lasting impact on Thane and its surrounding regions. He passed away on August 26, 2001.
Dighe's journey in politics began at a young age. He rose through the ranks of the Shiv Sena, eventually becoming the president of the party's Thane Unit in 1984. He cultivated a strong base of support and was known as a powerful figure in the area. Dighe was known for holding a daily Durbar at his Tembhi Naka residence, where he would address and resolve the issues faced by Thane citizens and Shiv Sena party workers. He was considered a grassroots leader.
Dighe's influence extended beyond his political activities. He was known for his charisma and dedication to serving the people. He established the Anand Ashram, where he provided assistance to the poor and needy. He was also a devout follower of Lord Shiva and was often seen offering prayers at Shiva temples.
However, Dighe's life was not without controversy. He was accused in the murder of Shiv Sena party member Sridhar Khopkar, who had allegedly voted for Congress in 1989. Dighe was arrested under TADA but was later released on bail. The investigation remained ongoing until his death.
Anand Dighe's death in August 2001 triggered widespread grief and unrest. He was admitted to Sunitidevi Singhania Hospital in Thane after a road accident, where he died of a heart attack. His followers, suspecting medical negligence, reacted violently, resulting in the destruction of the hospital. Conspiracy theories surrounding his death continue to circulate, with some believing that his popularity made him a target. Eknath Shinde has even hinted at knowing information about Dighe's death that could cause a "political earthquake" if revealed.
Dighe's legacy continues to resonate in Maharashtra politics. He is remembered as a powerful leader who played a crucial role in expanding the Shiv Sena's influence in Thane and Navi Mumbai. Several leaders who were mentored by Dighe continue to be influential figures in Maharashtra politics, including Eknath Shinde.
The upcoming memorial and statue in Thane serve as a tribute to Dighe's contributions and enduring impact on the region. Shinde stated that the "Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Tower" will be rebuilt at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Maidan near Talao Pali in old Thane. The project is expected to be completed by April 2026. The memorial will feature a 43-metre structure housing a statue of Dighe. Shinde emphasized that Dighe's contributions to the city's development and the Shiv Sena's presence in the region are unforgettable.
In addition to the memorial, Shinde has also launched a beautification project for the area west of Thane railway station. This Rs 4 crore project aims to improve pedestrian and vehicular traffic flow by renovating rickshaw and taxi stands, upgrading footpaths, installing information boards, and adding zebra crossings and lane markings. This project is scheduled for completion in December.
