A Lufthansa flight en route from Munich to Bangkok was diverted to Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport on Wednesday after a heated argument broke out between a husband and wife on board. The incident led to the man being handed over to airport security upon arrival.
The Lufthansa flight LH772 landed in Delhi at 10:26 am after the pilots informed the Air Traffic Control (ATC) about a "situation and possible unruly passenger". Sources indicate that the dispute arose between a German man and his Thai wife. The wife reportedly complained to the pilot, stating that she felt threatened by her husband's behavior and requested intervention.
According to reports, the husband engaged in disruptive behavior, which included throwing food, attempting to burn a blanket with a lighter, shouting at his wife, and disregarding instructions from the crew. The airline crew reported the disruptive conduct on board, which led to the decision to divert the flight. The flight had initially requested permission to land in Pakistan, but the request was not fulfilled.
Upon landing in Delhi, the husband was offloaded and handed over to airport security. Sources at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mentioned that the man apologized to the airport authorities. Security officials are in contact with the German embassy regarding the incident. It remains undecided whether the man will be handed over to Indian security agencies or returned to Germany.
Lufthansa issued a statement confirming the diversion due to an unruly passenger, emphasizing that the safety and security of passengers and crew are their top priority. The airline also stated that the flight to Bangkok is expected to continue after a minor delay. The wife chose to continue her journey to Bangkok.
This incident is not isolated, as similar events have occurred on flights. In light of such incidents, airlines are vigilant about unruly passenger behavior to ensure the safety and comfort of all those on board.
