A delegation of civil society organizations from the Meitei community in Manipur is scheduled to meet with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi on Monday, June 30. The meeting aims to address the current situation in the state, which has been plagued by ethnic strife.
The delegation comprises representatives from key Meitei civil society organizations, including the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), and the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS). COCOMI convenor Khuraijam Athouba stated that the delegation will convey the concerns and frustrations of the people to the Home Ministry officials. AMUCO senior member S Bhubon emphasized the importance of ensuring that Manipur's territorial boundary remains unaffected. The delegation plans to highlight both short and long-term measures needed to address the threats faced by farmers in the peripheral areas of the Imphal valley. They will also discuss the opening of highways to all, as well as the plight and resettlement of internally displaced people.
The ethnic violence in Manipur, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, has resulted in over 260 deaths and displaced thousands since May 2023. The central government imposed President's Rule in Manipur on February 13.
In the recent past, the central government has been actively involved in facilitating discussions between the Meitei and Kuki communities to restore peace and normalcy in the region. In April 2025, the Centre held a meeting with representatives from both communities, focusing on rebuilding trust, improving cooperation, and creating a roadmap for reconciliation. These discussions also emphasized maintaining law and order. A.K. Mishra, a retired special director of the Intelligence Bureau, has been a key interlocutor from the central government.
Prior to the joint meeting in April, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) officials had separately met with Kuki-Zo and Meitei civil society groups to discuss a 13-point action plan aimed at restoring normalcy in Manipur. These meetings addressed issues such as the violence in Kangpokpi and the blockade of national highways.
The upcoming talks on Monday are a continuation of these efforts to find an amicable solution to the ongoing conflict and address the grievances of the Meitei community. The focus will likely be on measures to protect the state's territorial integrity, ensure the safety of farmers, improve transportation, and facilitate the return of displaced individuals to their homes.
