The monsoon has arrived in Delhi and covered the entire country nine days ahead of its usual schedule. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Sunday, June 29, 2025, that the monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana, encompassing all of Delhi. Typically, the monsoon covers the entire country by July 8, making this the earliest nationwide coverage since 2020, when it occurred by June 26.
The monsoon's journey began with an early onset over Kerala on May 24, the earliest since 2009 when it arrived on May 23. Supported by strong low-pressure systems in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, it rapidly progressed, reaching central Maharashtra, including Mumbai, and the entire northeast by May 29. However, this was followed by a stall of about 18 days, from May 29 to June 16.
The arrival of the monsoon in Delhi and surrounding areas faced delays due to anti-cyclonic winds that hindered the flow of monsoon currents. Despite this, the monsoon has now covered the entire country ahead of schedule.
The IMD has predicted that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over many parts of northwest, central, east, and northeast India in the coming days. Extremely heavy rainfall is possible in some areas of Jharkhand on June 29 and 30, and in Odisha on June 29. An orange alert has been issued for several districts in Himachal Pradesh, warning of potential flash floods and landslides due to the heavy rainfall.
The normal monsoon timeline sees the rain-bearing system onset over Kerala around June 1 and cover the entire country by July 8. It usually starts retreating from northwest India around September 17 and withdraws completely by October 15.
In Delhi, the monsoon's arrival brought respite from the hot and humid weather. On Sunday, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius. The current weather in Delhi is mostly cloudy with a 5% chance of rain, a temperature of 82°F (28°C) but it feels like 94°F (35°C) due to 95% humidity. The forecast for Monday, June 30, 2025, predicts heavy thunderstorms during the day and rain showers at night, with a 75% chance of rain and temperatures between 78°F (26°C) and 86°F (30°C).
