A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fact-finding committee has arrived in Kolkata amidst heightened tensions surrounding the investigation into the alleged gang rape of a law student at South Calcutta Law College. The four-member committee, formed by BJP National President J.P. Nadda, aims to assess the law and order situation in West Bengal and investigate the incident.
The committee comprises Satpal Singh, former Union Minister and ex-police officer; Meenakshi Lekhi, former Union Minister; Biplab Kumar Deb, Member of Lok Sabha; and Manan Kumar Mishra, Member of Rajya Sabha. The panel is tasked with visiting the site of the incident and submitting its findings to Nadda. Nadda has strongly condemned the heinous crime and expressed concern over the state's law and order situation.
The alleged gang rape occurred on June 25 within the college premises, specifically in the security guard's room. The 24-year-old victim alleged that she was raped by two senior students and an alumnus of the institute. Following her complaint, police have arrested four individuals, including the prime accused, Manojit Mishra, who is an alumnus and ad-hoc college employee. The other arrested individuals are Zaib Ahmed and Promit Mukherjee, both students at the college, and Pinaki Banerjee, the security guard.
The arrest of the security guard followed inconsistencies in his statements and his presence being captured on CCTV footage. Police are investigating whether he was alone on duty at the time of the incident and why he did not prevent the crime. The victim's complaint alleges that the guard vacated his room on the instruction of the main accused.
Kolkata Police have formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. The SIT has been expanded to nine members to expedite the investigation. The team is analyzing CCTV footage, collecting forensic evidence, and recording statements. CCTV footage has reportedly corroborated the victim's account, confirming the presence of the accused at the scene. Investigators have also retrieved video clippings of the crime from the cellphones of the accused.
The BJP has criticized the state government and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging a failure to ensure campus safety and accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of having links to the accused. The party also staged a protest march, which was stopped by the police, leading to the detention of several BJP leaders. The BJP alleges that the security personnel on the college campus were appointed based on their allegiance to the ruling party rather than merit.
The incident has sparked outrage and concerns over women's safety in West Bengal. The National Commission for Women has also visited the college to assess the situation. The college authorities have been directed to evaluate the need for additional security personnel. The West Bengal Education Department has asked the college to convene a meeting of its governing body.
