A former student of Sharda University was found dead in a private hostel in Knowledge Park on Friday night. The 24-year-old man, originally from Purnia, Bihar, had been enrolled in the university's B.Tech (Computer Science) program. Police reported that he was discovered hanging in his room, which was located approximately two kilometers from the university campus.
Authorities recovered a suicide note in which the deceased cited "severe mental stress" as the reason for his action. He also requested the university to refund the unused portion of his fees, as he had stopped attending college after his second year. Sarvesh Singh, the station house officer of Knowledge Park, stated that the victim explicitly wrote that no one was responsible for his decision. Singh added that the victim may have been disheartened due to multiple backlogs. An autopsy is being conducted, and the body will be handed over to the family. Police confirmed that no FIR has been registered based on the note.
The victim's father alleged negligence by the university and hostel authorities. He claimed that the college should have informed them about his son not attending classes and that his son showed no signs of stress during a conversation a day prior to the incident.
Sharda University, however, has denied that the victim was a current student. According to Dr. Ajit Kumar, director of public relations at Sharda University, the deceased had not been enrolled for the past two years. Kumar stated that after failing to clear his second year, he was given a year to repeat but did not return for readmission. The university claims to have sent him an email asking him to either opt for readmission or formally withdraw, but received no response from the student or his family. The university maintains that since he was no longer a registered student, the issue of fees does not arise.
This incident marks the second suspected suicide linked to Sharda University in less than two months and has amplified concerns regarding student mental health and the communication gaps between families and educational institutions. In July, a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student at the same university also died by suicide, allegedly following humiliation by faculty members. In that case, the student, Jyoti Sharma, left a suicide note accusing two teachers of mental harassment and humiliation. The family of Jyoti Sharma accused the university staff of mental harassment and negligence. Following her family's complaint, the two named staffers were arrested.
