India has expressed its appreciation for the recent summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, acknowledging their commitment to dialogue and diplomacy in seeking an end to the conflict in Ukraine. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement on Saturday, welcoming the summit between the two leaders.
New Delhi has emphasized that diplomacy and dialogue are the only way forward to resolve the conflict. The MEA stated that India appreciates the progress made in the Summit and that the way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy.
The meeting in Alaska between Trump and Putin lasted for nearly three hours. Following the meeting, there was a brief joint press appearance. While no deal was announced, Trump described the discussions as "very productive" and said that "a considerable number of agreements" had been reached. He also stated that "there's no deal until there's a deal".
India's reaction comes in the backdrop of Trump's recent decision to implement a 50% tariff on India's exports to the US, citing India's oil trade with Russia as the reason.
Even as the country faces heightened US tariffs over Russian oil imports, PM Modi spoke with both Zelensky and Putin, emphasizing India's neutral push for a negotiated solution.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the world wants to see an early end to the conflict. India has welcomed the Trump-Putin summit in Alaska as a positive step toward peace, reiterating its call for dialogue and diplomacy to end the Ukraine conflict.
