A video has surfaced showing bottles being hurled at the convoy of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Golaghat on Sunday. Following the incident, a minister in Sarma's government has pointed blame at the Congress party.
According to reports, the incident occurred while the Chief Minister's convoy was passing through the area during an official visit. It is alleged that a group of Congress party workers threw a Sprite bottle at the CM's vehicle. No injuries or damage were reported, and local police were present at the scene, with additional security forces deployed after the event. The motive behind the bottle-throwing is still unclear, though it is believed to be a form of political protest. As of yet, no official statement has been released by authorities, and an investigation is ongoing.
In response to the incident, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika has accused the Congress party of orchestrating the attack. Hazarika stated that attempts to blame the BJP are baseless and irresponsible. He suggested that preliminary investigations indicate the attack stemmed from personal financial disputes, not political vendetta. The minister highlighted that the area where the incident occurred is predominantly a Congress stronghold. Hazarika also referenced accusations that a Congress worker claimed a Congress leader demanded money in exchange for a party ticket, implying the attack could be a result of internal conflict within the Congress.
The Congress party has yet to respond to these specific allegations. However, this is not the first time political tensions have resulted in attacks on political figures' convoys in Assam. In April 2025, the convoy of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi was attacked, with Assam police later blaming an expelled Congress leader. Minister Pijush Hazarika also refuted allegations linking the BJP to the attack on Bordoloi, suggesting it stemmed from personal financial disputes. In February 2025, Congress MP Rakibul Hussain's convoy was attacked by masked assailants in Nagaon district.
These incidents raise concerns about the political climate in Assam and the potential for violence. The upcoming panchayat elections have seemingly heightened tensions, with political parties accusing each other of intimidation and corruption. The Congress has demanded a comprehensive review of law and order in Assam, alleging a partisan role of the police and systematic attempts to intimidate the opposition. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has refuted these claims, attributing the attacks to internal issues within the Congress.
