The disturbing trend of dowry-related deaths continues to plague Tamil Nadu, highlighting the persistent and tragic reality of this social evil in India. Recent incidents underscore the immense pressure some women face shortly after marriage, often leading to devastating consequences.
In a recent case, a 22-year-old newlywed in Tamil Nadu died by suicide after allegedly facing dowry harassment from her husband and in-laws. This occurred just a day after a similar incident in Tiruppur, raising serious concerns about the prevalence of such abuse. Lokeshwari, who had been married for only three days, reportedly took her own life after an argument regarding dowry demands. Her husband allegedly asked her to request additional gold, an air conditioner, and other household items from her parents. Police have registered a case and are taking steps to apprehend the husband. The husband's family, however, denies all allegations of dowry demands.
Another harrowing case involves 27-year-old Ridhanya, who also died by suicide due to alleged dowry harassment. Ridhanya, the daughter of a garment businessman, married Kavin Kumar in April 2025. Her family had reportedly provided a dowry of 300 sovereigns of gold and a Volvo car worth Rs 70 lakh. However, this was apparently not enough, and she faced severe mental and physical torture, ultimately leading to her tragic decision. Before her death, Ridhanya sent audio messages to her father, detailing the unbearable mental torture she endured. She was found dead in her car, having consumed pesticide. Kavin Kumar and his parents have been arrested on charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
These cases are not isolated incidents. Activists and authorities acknowledge that despite legal safeguards, dowry-related harassment and deaths remain a significant problem in India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), thousands of cases are registered under the Dowry Prohibition Act every year.
These recent dowry deaths in Tamil Nadu underscore the urgent need for stricter law enforcement, increased awareness, and a fundamental shift in societal attitudes towards dowry. The voices of victims like Ridhanya, captured in their final messages, serve as a stark reminder of the devastating human cost of this deeply rooted social problem.
