An Air India flight AI103, traveling from Delhi to Washington, D.C., was grounded in Vienna, Austria on July 2nd, 2025, due to a maintenance issue discovered during a scheduled refueling stop. The airline cancelled the flight from Vienna to Washington, D.C. and deplaned all passengers.
During routine aircraft inspections during the scheduled stop, an "extended maintenance task" was identified, requiring rectification before the flight could continue. Due to the additional time needed for the repairs, the Vienna to Washington, D.C. leg of the journey was cancelled.
An Air India spokesperson stated that passengers eligible for visa-free entry into Austria or those holding valid Schengen visas were provided with hotel accommodations while they waited for the next available flight. The airline also said it was working with local immigration and security officials to provide support, including waiting areas and basic services, for those who could not enter Austria due to visa restrictions. Passengers affected by the cancellation have been rebooked on alternative flights to Delhi or offered full refunds, based on their preferences.
The cancellation of AI103 also impacted the return flight, AI104, from Washington, D.C., to Delhi via Vienna, which was also cancelled. Passengers affected by the return flight cancellation have also been rebooked or offered refunds.
This incident follows recent disruptions in Air India's services. Notably, an Air India aircraft, AI 357 from Tokyo to Delhi, was diverted to Kolkata on June 29 due to high cabin temperatures. Furthermore, an Air India flight from Delhi to Vienna dropped nearly 900 feet mid-air shortly after takeoff on June 14, prompting an investigation and the grounding of the pilots. These incidents, along with the Air India crash in Ahmedabad in June, have raised concerns about the airline's operations.
