Six families of victims of the AI 171 crash received a "second set" of remains from the Civil Hospital on Thursday. These remains were discovered at the wreckage site in Meghaninagar during post-disaster operations. The remains were matched with DNA samples provided by the families.
According to sources close to the situation, a consent form was distributed among relatives of the deceased, including passengers, crew members, doctors, their relatives, and local residents. The form requested permission to conduct last rites for any remains discovered during the clearing of the site or during medical analysis.
The six families, all from different parts of Gujarat, including Anand, Nadiad, and Ahmedabad, had requested hospital authorities to contact them if a DNA match was found. An official stated that it is rare for a person to have more than one funeral, but in this instance, the families have the DNA match and a certificate of handover of the mortal remains. Therefore, there will be no issue even if the remains are cremated more than once.
Of the remaining 10 victims, the families of nine have consented to the hospital carrying out the last rites, while a response from the family of one victim is still pending. Sources indicate that the new sets of remains are minuscule compared to the first. According to an official involved in the process, some remains include a part of the body, while others consist of one or more bones. The official added that the nature of the crash may have caused intense distress and fragmentation of the victims' bodies.
At the end of June, the Gujarat health department reported the air crash death toll at 260. This figure included 229 passengers and 12 crew members aboard the flight, totaling 241. The remaining 19 fatalities occurred on the ground. All mortal remains were sent to forensic laboratories for DNA analysis.
Following the AI 171 crash on June 12, in which the aircraft crashed into the BJ Medical College hostel, killing 241 passengers and crew, as well as 19 people on the ground, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital is gradually returning to normal. More human remains were discovered at the crash site. The body of the final passenger, Anil Khimani from Kutch, was handed over by the Health Department through the hospital on June 28 after a lengthy DNA extraction procedure from the charred remains.
All remains discovered at the Air India flight 171 crash site in Ahmedabad have been identified using DNA matching or facial recognition, with the exception of one case, according to Gujarat health department officials. A senior government official stated that the death toll from the plane crash is 260, including 241 people on board and 19 non-passengers and that no new bodies have been recovered from the site in the last few days.
