At the close of play on Day 2 of the second Test at Edgbaston, England found themselves trailing India by a massive 510 runs, thanks to a historic innings from Indian captain Shubman Gill. Gill's record-breaking 269 propelled India to a formidable first-innings total of 587, their highest score in England in 35 years.

Gill's magnificent innings, which lasted for eight and a half hours, was adorned with 30 boundaries and three sixes. He exhibited a wide array of elegant drives and well-timed flicks, dismantling the English bowling attack with a blend of composure and skill. This was Gill's maiden double century in Test cricket. He also stitched together crucial partnerships with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and Washington Sundar (42), further frustrating the English bowlers.

In the process of reaching his double century, Gill broke several records. He surpassed Virat Kohli's record for the highest individual score by an Indian captain in Test cricket, eclipsing Kohli's 254 against South Africa in 2019. Gill's 269 is now the highest Test score by an Indian in England, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at the Oval in 1979. He also became the first Indian to score more than 250 outside the subcontinent. At 25 years and 298 days, Gill is the second-youngest to score a Test double century as India captain, behind Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Gill is also the first Indian captain to score a double century in England.

After India's mammoth declaration, the Indian pacers, Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, capitalized on the pressure, reducing England to 25-3 with three edges finding their way into the slips cordon. Akash Deep, playing his first match of the series, struck twice in an over, dismissing Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope. Mohammed Siraj then removed Zak Crawley, leaving England in a precarious position.

However, Harry Brook (30) and Joe Root (18) showed resilience, forging an unbeaten 52-run partnership to see out the day. Despite their efforts, England still face a daunting task to get back into the game, trailing by 510 runs.

Earlier in the day, India resumed their innings at 310-5, with Gill and Jadeja extending their partnership. England's Shoaib Bashir eventually dismissed Jadeja, while Josh Tongue accounted for Gill, who was caught at square leg by Ollie Pope. Bashir finished with 3-167.

The third Test of the series is scheduled to take place at Lord's from July 10-14.
