During his visit to Trinidad and Tobago on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar as "Bihar ki Beti" (daughter of Bihar), highlighting her ancestral connections to the Indian state of Bihar. Addressing the Indian community, PM Modi shared that PM Persad-Bissessar's ancestors hailed from Buxar in Bihar, and she has also visited the region.
PM Modi emphasized the connection between India and its diaspora, stating, "We are not just connected by blood or surname, we are connected by belonging. India looks out to you and welcomes you". He underscored that Bihar's heritage is a source of pride for India and the world, noting the state's historical contributions to various fields. "Bihar has shown the way to the world in various fields for centuries. New opportunities will emerge from Bihar in the 21st," PM Modi said.
This visit marks a significant moment as it is PM Modi's first official trip to Trinidad and Tobago and the first bilateral Prime Ministerial-level visit from India since 1999. He is also set to receive the Order of Trinidad and Tobago, the highest honor of the country.
Upon his arrival, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar, who wore traditional Indian attire, along with her entire cabinet. The event was filled with cultural displays, including a traditional Bhojpuri Chautal performance, which PM Modi described as "a priceless cultural connection," highlighting the deep-rooted ties between the two nations, particularly with eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Members of the First Felicity Ramleela and Cultural Group, dressed as figures from Indian scriptures, also greeted him.
PM Modi also carried holy water from the Mahakumbh and requested PM Persad-Bissessar to offer it, along with water from the Sarayu river, to the Ganga Dhara in Trinidad and Tobago. He also extended an invitation to her to visit the Mahakumbh.
Furthermore, PM Modi announced that individuals of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago, up to the sixth generation, will now be eligible for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards.
PM Modi encouraged the Indian diaspora to visit India and their ancestral villages, saying, "Walk the soil they walked on. Bring your children and neighbors... We will welcome all of you with open arms, warm hearts and Jalebi". He also highlighted Bihar's rich historical and cultural legacy while praising the resilience of the Indian diaspora.
The Prime Minister's visit seeks to strengthen bilateral relations, with discussions focusing on trade, energy, technology, and culture. PM Modi is also scheduled to address a Joint Parliament Session and meet with members of the Indian community.
