Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has recently launched a scathing critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on the condition of roads in Varanasi, Modi's parliamentary constituency. Raut's remarks, laden with sarcasm, accuse the Prime Minister of neglecting his constituency while touring foreign countries.
Raut highlighted the poor condition of Varanasi's roads, stating that people are sharing photos on social media to show the disrepair. He questioned Modi's ability to ensure basic infrastructure in his own constituency, implying a failure in "vikas" or development. Raut's criticism comes as visuals of collapsed roads in Varanasi circulate online, raising concerns about the difficulties pilgrims and "kanwariyas" may face traveling to Kashi during the holy month of Shrawan, especially near Godowlia.
In a pointed jab, Raut stated, "Vikas purush Ghana, Tinidad Tibago jaise mahaan desho'n mein ghoom rahe hain. Banaras ki janta unko dhoondh rahi hai," which translates to, "The 'Vikas Purush' is touring great countries like Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, having food with them. The people of Varanasi are searching for him". This statement suggests that Modi, whom the BJP often portrays as a development-oriented leader, is more focused on international relations than addressing the needs of his constituents. He added that while the PM travels by helicopter and wouldn't see the potholes, the people of Varanasi are struggling with them.
Raut's criticism isn't an isolated incident. In July of last year, he expressed disappointment with the development in Kashi, saying that it should have been done by preserving the original identity of Kashi. He claimed that those who promised Kyoto-like development cheated Kashi and Maa Ganga. He stated that despite crores being spent on development, basic problems remain, and one heavy rain exposed the reality.
Beyond the state of Varanasi, Raut has also criticized what he sees as the Modi government's tendency to ignore domestic issues while focusing on international relations. He has previously suggested that Modi should have a "tour and travel ministry," given his frequent foreign visits. He has questioned the government's handling of farmer suicides in Maharashtra, terror attacks, and the Air India situation, contrasting these issues with Modi's travels abroad.
It is worth noting that concerns about Varanasi's infrastructure are not new. Even back in 2014, during Modi's initial campaign for the Lok Sabha seat, issues such as poor roads and traffic jams were highlighted. Modi himself acknowledged these problems and promised to address them.
Raut's recent remarks are a continuation of his long-standing criticism of PM Modi and his administration. They also reflect broader concerns about the balance between international engagements and domestic priorities, as well as the quality of development work in Varanasi.
