The United States has resumed processing student visas, offering a reprieve to international students just ahead of the fall academic session. The US State Department directed all US diplomatic posts abroad to resume scheduling interviews for F, M, and J visa applicants on June 18, bringing an end to a pause in visa processing that began on May 27.
The suspension of visa processing had raised concerns, as the period from May to August is crucial for student visa applications; in 2024, 70% of student visas were issued during these months. NAFSA CEO Fanta Aw noted that at least 50% of new international students still needed to schedule visa appointments to arrive in time for the fall semester. The US Mission in India has also confirmed the resumption of student visa processing. An embassy spokesperson stated that applicants should check embassy or consulate websites for appointment availability.
The State Department is implementing enhanced screening measures, including a review of applicants' social media and online presence. Visa officers will look for indications of hostility towards the US, support for terrorism or antisemitism, and a history of political activism. Applicants may be required to make their social media profiles public.
The visa processing backlog is expected to pose a challenge. The State Department anticipates this and has advised visa officers to consider the resource demands of vetting while scheduling interviews, which may result in fewer FMJ cases being scheduled than before.
For the fall intake in the USA, it is recommended to apply for a visa three to five months before the program start date. As the fall semester typically begins in late August or early September, students should apply for their visas as soon as possible. Students can apply for their student visas up to 365 days before the start date of their program but cannot enter the United States more than 30 days before their program begins.
To apply for a student visa, students must first apply to and be accepted by a SEVP-approved school in the United States. Once accepted, the school will provide the student with the necessary documents to apply for a visa. Applicants must complete the online visa application form (DS-160) and pay the application fee.
The fall intake is a popular choice among international students due to the wider range of courses, increased financial aid opportunities, alignment with internship schedules, and the chance to experience campus life from the beginning of the academic year.
