A group of Kanwariyas allegedly vandalized a dhaba (roadside eatery) in Uttar Pradesh after discovering that their food was prepared with onion. The incident occurred on Monday night on the Delhi-Haridwar national highway near Falauda bypass, within the Purkazi police station area in Muzaffarnagar district.
According to police reports, the Kanwariyas became furious after allegedly being served dinner containing onion. Around 20 of them reportedly broke some of the dhaba's furniture. The Superintendent of Police, Satyanarayan Prajapat, stated that police officers were dispatched to the scene to pacify the Kanwariyas.
Kanwariyas generally abstain from non-vegetarian food and food prepared with onion, garlic, and other "tamasic" (considered non-conducive to spiritual practice) ingredients during their pilgrimage.
While the police arrived and brought the situation under control, no formal complaint was filed, and consequently, no case has been registered in connection with the incident. The Kanwariyas were pacified and continued on their journey. A video of the incident recorded by a bystander circulated widely on social media.
In response to the incident and to ensure the smooth and safe continuation of the Kanwar Yatra, a senior Uttar Pradesh government official chaired a high-level meeting in Meerut. Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh emphasized that the government considers the Kanwar Yatra's safe and smooth completion a top priority. Directives were issued to ensure that outsiders do not enter the camps set up for Kanwariyas and to strictly enforce the ban on single-use plastics. Singh also stressed the importance of providing basic facilities such as drinking water, food, and cleanliness for the Kanwariyas.
Other directives included repairing roads along the Kanwar Yatra route, covering electric poles with polythene, placing barricades around transformers to prevent accidents, and inspecting the quality of food at eateries and dhabas to prevent incidents of food poisoning. Officials also stated that DJ setups must adhere to prescribed height limits and avoid playing "obscene songs". Furthermore, guidelines were issued for setting up camps away from roads, ensuring health checkups for all Kanwariyas, and providing immediate medical assistance, including anti-venom, in case of snake bites.
