President Droupadi Murmu has nominated C. Sadanandan Master, a BJP veteran from Kerala, to the Rajya Sabha. The nomination, announced on Saturday, July 12, 2025, recognizes individuals for their eminence in arts, letters, and public service.
C. Sadanandan Master, a retired school teacher and current state vice-president of the Kerala BJP, is known as a "living martyr" by the party. In 1994, he lost both his legs in an attack allegedly perpetrated by CPI(M) workers. The incident occurred on January 25, 1994, when he was ambushed near his home village of Perinchery. According to reports, a gang dragged him from his car and severed both legs, leaving him on the roadside.
Despite the brutal attack, Sadanandan Master's spirit remained unbroken. He returned to teaching in 1999 at Sree Durga Vilasam Higher Secondary School in Peramangalam, Thrissur district, and has remained active in social and political life. He also contested elections from the Koothuparambu constituency in 2016 and 2021. Beyond teaching, Sadanandan is the state vice-president of the National Teachers Union in Kerala, edits its magazine Deshiya Adhyapaka Vartha, and is part of the Bharatiya Vichara Kendram, an RSS-affiliated intellectual group.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the contributions of C. Sadanandan Master. In a post on X, Modi stated that Sadanandan Master’s life "is the epitome of courage and refusal to bow to injustice". He added, "Violence and intimidation couldn't deter his spirit towards national development. His efforts as a teacher and social worker are also commendable. He is extremely passionate towards youth empowerment". Modi congratulated him on his nomination and wished him well in his role as MP.
Sadanandan Master's journey is a testament to his resilience and commitment to his beliefs. Born into a communist family, he was drawn to the RSS ideology during his student days, which allegedly led to the attack. His nomination is viewed by the BJP as a recognition of the sacrifices made by RSS cadres who have remained steadfast in their ideology despite facing threats and violence.
BJP National General Secretary B.L. Santhosh hailed Sadanandan Master as "a symbol of Nationalist Resistance to inhuman Communist ideology and violence across the globe". Sadanandan Master himself expressed humility upon accepting the Rajya Sabha nomination, stating his commitment to realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat and Viksit Keralam.
Sadanandan Master's nomination to the Rajya Sabha is not only a personal achievement but also a symbolic moment for the BJP and its workers in Kerala. It underscores the party's recognition of his struggles and contributions, as well as its commitment to supporting those who have faced adversity for their ideological beliefs. His life story, marked by both tragedy and triumph, is expected to inspire many.
