Ghulam Nabi Azad, a prominent figure in Indian politics and leader of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), has once again emphasized the critical need to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). Azad has also dismissed speculations regarding his potential nomination for the Vice-President of India.
Azad, while speaking to the media in Reasi, underscored that statehood is essential for the development, progress, and overall betterment of the region. He stated that this is not just a matter for one religion or region, but concerns every party, community, and individual in Jammu and Kashmir. He believes the restoration of statehood should happen as soon as possible.
He expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and Home Minister for their promises to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Azad conveyed his firm belief that they will fulfill their promise and restore statehood to the region.
In response to questions about his possible nomination for the Vice-President's post, Azad urged the media and the public to stop spreading such rumors. He stated that he is not a candidate for the Vice-President's role and that his primary focus is on fighting for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly for the restoration of statehood and the protection of their rights.
Azad voiced his concern about the growing religious divide in Jammu and Kashmir. He lamented the fading sense of brotherhood and unity that once existed, where people did not worry about religion or political parties. He insisted that development, like statehood, should not depend on a person's religion or political views and stressed that everyone in Jammu and Kashmir deserves justice, respect, and a voice, regardless of their political affiliations.
Azad recalled his time as Minister of State for Home Affairs, during which he recommended granting statehood to three Union territories. He highlighted that he consistently raised the issue of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir in Parliament.
Ghulam Nabi Azad's political journey includes serving as Chief Minister and Union Minister. He started his political career in 1973 and has held several key positions in the Indian National Congress. In 2022, he formed his own political party, the Democratic Progressive Azad Party.
Recently, Azad was part of an all-party delegation visit to Kuwait, where he spoke strongly in defense of India and against the spread of disinformation by Pakistan. During the visit, he was hospitalized but has since recovered.
