A top aide to former President Donald Trump has accused India of financially supporting Russia's war in Ukraine by continuing to purchase oil from Moscow. Stephen Miller, a former deputy chief of staff in the White House, stated that India's actions were "not acceptable" and highlighted the country's alignment with China in this regard.
Miller's comments represent a sharp rebuke from the Trump administration towards India, a key U.S. ally in the Indo-Pacific region. He noted that "People will be shocked to learn that India is basically tied with China in purchasing Russian oil. That's an astonishing fact".
Despite pressure from the U.S., Indian officials have indicated they will continue sourcing oil from Russia, citing factors such as price, grade of crude, inventories, logistics, and other economic considerations. Russian oil is currently being offered at a discounted price due to sanctions imposed by Western countries. India's continued purchase of Russian oil has been a point of contention in the U.S.-India relationship. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed Washington's frustration over the matter, stating that it supports Moscow's war efforts in Ukraine.
The U.S. has threatened to impose tariffs on Indian products if the country continues to purchase Russian oil. However, India has remained steadfast in its position, prioritizing its own energy needs. This situation has created a complex dynamic between the two countries, as the U.S. seeks to isolate Russia economically while India navigates its own economic and strategic interests.
The issue of India's Russian oil imports gained further attention when reports surfaced that India might halt these imports. Former President Trump cautiously welcomed these reports, but Indian officials later dismissed the claim.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has had a significant impact on the global energy market, with many countries seeking to diversify their energy sources and reduce their dependence on Russia. India's decision to continue purchasing Russian oil reflects the challenges faced by many countries in balancing their energy needs with geopolitical considerations.
