Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai has articulated a vision of unified commitment from the judiciary, legislature, and executive branches to ensure swift and affordable justice for all citizens. Speaking at the inauguration of the Gauhati High Court's Itanagar bench, CJI Gavai emphasized that these three pillars of democracy exist solely to serve the people and deliver justice efficiently and at minimal cost. He advocated for decentralization, asserting that justice should reach people's doorsteps rather than remain confined to halls of power.

CJI Gavai lauded the efforts to preserve and promote tribal culture, highlighting India's unity in diversity. He stressed the paramount importance of the Constitution and the need for economic and social equality alongside political equality. He reminded citizens that while the country progresses, it should not come at the expense of its culture and traditions. He urged everyone to read the Constitution, emphasizing that it should be every Indian's "dharma granth" (religious scripture).

The CJI has been a staunch supporter of decentralization, advocating for justice to be accessible to all. He commended the successive chief justices of the Gauhati High Court for their work in making justice more accessible. He also acknowledged Arunachal Pradesh's unity in diversity, noting the state's numerous tribes and sub-tribes, and the government's efforts to preserve their traditions.

During his address, CJI Gavai shared a touching experience from his visit to shelter homes in Manipur, where a woman welcomed him, reinforcing the idea that India is one home for all Indians. He quoted B.R. Ambedkar, emphasizing the importance of India's unity and the Constitution's role in keeping the country strong during peace and war.

CJI Gavai's commitment to social and political justice aligns with Ambedkar's philosophy of equality and dignity. He views his role as an opportunity to strive for justice for all, regardless of social or economic status. He aims to make litigation affordable and less burdensome for the poor by synchronizing the activities of legal services authorities at various levels. Diversity and inclusivity are integral to his decision-making process, and he seeks to increase representation of women and diverse communities in constitutional courts without compromising merit.

He has emphasized the judiciary's fundamental duty to reach the last citizen in need of justice. He also highlighted the significant advancements in social and economic equality in India since the Constitution's adoption.

CJI Gavai has expressed gratitude to the government for its support in improving judicial infrastructure. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for sanctioning funds for the Supreme Court expansion project, which aims to provide speedy and efficient justice to citizens. He also acknowledged the Bar's role as an essential component of the justice system.

In essence, CJI Gavai's vision underscores a collaborative effort between the judiciary, legislature, and executive to ensure that justice is not only swift and affordable but also accessible to every citizen, irrespective of their geographical location or socio-economic background. This vision is deeply rooted in the principles of the Constitution and the philosophy of B.R. Ambedkar, emphasizing equality, unity, and the preservation of India's rich cultural heritage.
