Following a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, U.S. President Donald Trump has offered to mediate and help find a solution to the Kashmir issue. Trump made the announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social.
Trump lauded the leaders of India and Pakistan for agreeing to halt further escalation after weeks of military tension triggered by the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. In response to the attack, the Indian Armed Forces struck terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
In his statement, Trump said he was proud of the "strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan" for stopping the recent aggression that could have led to immense death and destruction. He also stated his intention to increase trade substantially with both nations. "While not even discussed, I am going to increase trade, substantially, with both of these great Nations. Additionally, I will work with you both to see if, after a 'thousand years,' a solution can be arrived at concerning Kashmir," Trump said. He added, "God Bless the leadership of India and Pakistan on a job well done!!!".
The announcement comes after an understanding was reached between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan to stop all firing along the Line of Control and International Border. However, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that Pakistan violated the bilateral understanding soon after it was reached. Multiple explosions were reported in the Jammu and Kashmir regions of Srinagar and Udhampur.
India has consistently maintained that Kashmir is an integral part of India and has opposed third-party mediation. An official response from the Indian government to Trump's offer is still awaited.
Gaurav Gogoi welcomed the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan and praised the Indian armed forces for defending India's territory and sovereignty. He also expressed his support for the families who suffered during the Pahalgam attack and cross-border firing in Jammu and Kashmir.
