India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, is scheduled to visit the United States from June 30 to July 2, 2025. This visit is at the invitation of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The primary purpose of the visit is to participate in the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting (QFMM) in Washington, D.C., on July 1.
The QFMM will involve foreign ministers from Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. The ministers will review the progress of existing Quad initiatives and exchange views on regional and global developments, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Discussions may also include new proposals to promote a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific. This meeting builds upon the discussions from the previous QFMM held on January 21, 2025. The January meeting reaffirmed the Quad's commitment to sovereignty, democratic values, and international law.
Thomas Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the Department of State, stated that the upcoming meeting "builds on that momentum to advance a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific". Pigott emphasized the U.S. leadership role in promoting strength, peace, and prosperity in the region.
In addition to the Quad meeting, Jaishankar will inaugurate an exhibition titled "The Human Cost of Terrorism" at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on June 30. The exhibition aims to highlight the global impact of terrorism and the international community's efforts to combat it. It will showcase the devastating toll of terrorist acts worldwide. The inauguration of this exhibition occurs just before Pakistan assumes the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.
The QFMM is expected to lay the foundation for the Quad Leaders' Summit, which India will host later this year. The summit will bring together leaders from the United States, Australia, Japan, and India.
The Quad has emerged as a crucial grouping focused on peace, security, and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The meeting will be the first time the ministers have gathered since the Pahalgam attack.
During his U.S. visit in December 2024, Jaishankar met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken to review the advancement of the U.S.-India partnership. They acknowledged the strengthened cooperation across various domains and increased comfort levels between the two nations. Jaishankar also met with the outgoing National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to discuss the progress of the India-U.S. strategic partnership and exchanged views on regional and global developments.
