Donald Trump has once again asserted that he prevented a nuclear war between India and Pakistan, claiming his intervention through phone calls and trade negotiations de-escalated tensions between the two nations. This is not the first time Trump has made such a claim; he has repeatedly stated that he "stopped a war between India and Pakistan".
According to Trump, he used trade as leverage, warning both countries that they would lose U.S. trade if they escalated the conflict. He stated that he made personal calls to the leaders of both India and Pakistan during a period of heightened tensions. Trump claimed that he told them to stop, conditioning trade relations on their adherence to peace. He said, "If you stop it, we're doing trade. If you don't stop it we're not going to do any trade". He has also said that Pakistan was about to retaliate, "and eventually they're going to go nuclear".
The White House has echoed Trump's claims. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump used trade "in a very powerful way as leverage" to bring the conflict to an end. She added that the conflict "could have resulted in a nuclear war if we had not had a President who believed in the strength and the leverage that comes with the job of being the President of the United States of America".
However, these claims have been met with skepticism and rebuttal from Indian government sources. India has consistently maintained that the ceasefire and understanding on the cessation of hostilities with Pakistan were reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries. Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated in Parliament that no leader of any country asked India to stop Operation Sindoor. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also stated that there was no third-party intervention in bringing about the ceasefire.
Tensions between India and Pakistan had escalated following an attack, with New Delhi claiming "cross-border links," which Islamabad denied, offering a neutral probe. This led to retaliatory air strikes and drone attacks. A ceasefire was announced on May 10, which eased tensions.
Trump has claimed to have "settled 6 Wars in 6 months, one of them a possible Nuclear disaster". He has also stated that he stopped seven wars, using tariffs as leverage in four of them.
