The much-anticipated Ro-Ro ferry service connecting Mumbai to the Konkan region is poised to launch in early September, potentially revolutionizing travel for both locals and tourists. Maharashtra Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane announced that the service, which will connect Mumbai to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, is expected to be the fastest in South Asia.

Travel Time and Routes

The ferry service aims to drastically reduce travel time between Mumbai and the Konkan coast. The M2M Princess, the vessel operating the service, travels at 25 knots. Journeys that currently take 10-12 hours by road could be completed in half the time. The Mumbai to Jaigad route in Ratnagiri is estimated to take just 3 to 3.5 hours, while the Mumbai to Vijaydurg route in Sindhudurg district will take approximately 5 to 6 hours. An older report mentioned the Mumbai-Vijaydurg trip would take approximately 6 hours, compared to the current train journey of 13-14 hours. The ferry will depart from Bhaucha Dhakka in South Mumbai.

The Ro-Ro project was initially conceived during Devendra Fadnavis' tenure as Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019. The current Mahayuti government has brought the project to fruition.

While this new ferry service promises considerable advantages, it is worth noting a past Ro-Ro train service from Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa, launched by Konkan Railway, received scarce interest due to the high cost and inconvenient timing.
