In Uttar Pradesh, another woman has allegedly been burned by her husband over dowry demands, just days after the Nikki Bhati case. The incident occurred in Greater Noida's Sirsa village, where 26-year-old Nikki Payla was allegedly tortured and set on fire by her husband and in-laws.
According to police reports, Nikki was admitted to Fortis Hospital on August 21 with severe burns and was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, but she died en route. Her sister, Kanchan, reported the incident, leading to the arrest of Nikki's husband, Vipin Bhati, while authorities are still searching for her mother-in-law, father-in-law, and brother-in-law.
Kanchan stated that Nikki had been harassed and assaulted for years over dowry demands, including a demand of Rs 36 lakh. She recounted the horrific event, claiming, "They hit her on her neck and head, then threw acid and set her ablaze... I was also beaten unconscious". Nikki's six-year-old son witnessed the event, telling neighbors, "They poured something on my mother, slapped her and then set her on fire with a lighter".
Videos of the alleged harassment have surfaced on social media, showing Nikki being beaten and dragged by her husband and mother-in-law. Police are investigating the death from all angles, taking the videos shared by family members into consideration. Vipin Bhati, however, denies killing his wife, stating, "I have no remorse. I haven't killed her. She died on her own. Husbands and wives often have fights…it is very common".
Authorities revealed that Vipin Bhati had been booked in 2024 for assaulting another woman. An FIR was registered against him for voluntarily causing hurt, breach of peace, and criminal intimidation. The woman in that case alleged that Vipin and another man beat her, hurled abuses, and took her phone.
This incident follows a similar case where Khushboo Pipaliya, a 23-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh, was allegedly branded with a hot knife by her husband over dowry. Her husband, Dilip Pipaliya, reportedly heated a knife on the gas stove and branded her all over her body before thrashing her. Khushboo was rescued by her brother and is currently receiving treatment. She alleged that her husband used to beat her and demand dowry, and her father supported her claims.
These incidents highlight the ongoing issue of dowry-related violence in India, despite the practice being illegal. The case has been registered at Kasna Police Station, and investigations are underway.
