The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced significant financial assistance for the families affected by the recent Mata Vaishno Devi landslide and floods. The Chief Minister has approved an ex-gratia relief of ₹6 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in these natural disasters. This compensation will be provided through a joint contribution from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

In addition to the ex-gratia relief, the government has also placed ₹10 crore at the disposal of the Deputy Commissioners (DCs). This fund is intended to facilitate immediate relief measures and rehabilitation efforts in the affected areas. The DCs will be responsible for disbursing the funds and ensuring that the assistance reaches those who need it most.

The announcement comes in the wake of heavy rains and subsequent flooding and landslides that have caused widespread devastation in the region. The Mata Vaishno Devi landslide, in particular, resulted in a significant loss of life, prompting the government to take immediate action to support the affected families.

Earlier in August 2025, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had announced ex-gratia relief for families affected by a cloudburst and landslide in the Kathua district. In that instance, ₹2 lakh was announced for the families of the deceased, ₹1 lakh for those severely injured, and ₹50,000 for those with minor injuries. Furthermore, compensation was also allocated for property damage, with ₹1 lakh for fully damaged houses, ₹50,000 for severely damaged houses, and ₹25,000 for partially damaged houses.

The recent announcement of ₹6 lakh ex-gratia signifies an increased commitment from the government to provide substantial support to those affected by natural calamities. The allocation of ₹10 crore to the DCs underscores the importance of localized and immediate response mechanisms in disaster management.

The government has assured the public that all possible measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens. Authorities are working to restore essential services and provide necessary assistance to those who have been displaced or otherwise affected by the floods and landslides. The focus remains on providing immediate relief, facilitating rehabilitation, and preventing further loss of life and property.
