In a recent diplomatic development, Finland's President Alexander Stubb and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a telephonic conversation, signaling a strong commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and addressing global challenges. The discussion, held on Wednesday, focused on key areas of mutual interest, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the deepening of India-EU relations, and collaborations in trade, technology, and sustainability.

President Stubb shared his assessment of the recent meetings in Washington D.C. between leaders from Europe, the United States, and Ukraine, which centered on finding a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's consistent support for the peaceful resolution of the conflict and the early restoration of peace and stability. Both leaders emphasized the need for a just and lasting solution to the war, recognizing it as a shared global interest. Stubb acknowledged India's important role in securing peace, noting that India is heard and respected in the South, West, and East.

A significant aspect of the conversation revolved around bolstering economic ties between India and the European Union. President Stubb conveyed Finland's support for the swift conclusion of a mutually beneficial India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Such an agreement is expected to unlock new economic opportunities, enhance trade volumes, and increase investment flows between the regions.

The leaders also reviewed the progress in the India-Finland bilateral relationship and reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing partnerships in emerging fields, including quantum technologies, 6G, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and sustainability. This aligns with India's focus on innovation-driven growth and Finland's expertise in digital advancements, potentially positioning both nations as leaders in the global technology arena.

Furthermore, President Stubb expressed his support for the AI Impact Summit to be hosted by India in 2026. This endorsement signals Finland's recognition of India's growing role in shaping international AI governance and ethical standards.

In March 2024, India signed a Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. This agreement secures a $100 billion investment commitment from EFTA over 15 years and is projected to create one million direct jobs in India. The agreement is set to come into effect from October 1st.

Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to President Stubb to visit India at an early date. Both leaders agreed to maintain regular communication to monitor progress on shared priorities and explore new avenues for collaboration. This interaction occurs during a period of heightened geopolitical tensions, underscoring the importance of diversified partnerships.
