Filip Ekberg, the Swedish forward who plays for the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and a prospect for the Carolina Hurricanes, is garnering attention as a player to watch in the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Ekberg, born on April 14, 2007, was drafted by the Hurricanes in the seventh round of the 2025 NHL Draft, with the 221st overall pick. Despite projections placing him as a potential fourth-round pick, he slipped to the later rounds, making him a possible steal for the Hurricanes.

During the 2024-25 season, his first in North America with the Ottawa 67's, Ekberg recorded 16 goals and 29 assists for a total of 45 points in 53 games. He was also named OHL Rookie of the Month in March 2025. Before joining the 67's, Ekberg played in Sweden for Almtuna IS, even making his professional debut in the HockeyAllsvenskan during the 2022–23 season. In his first game, he scored a hat-trick, becoming the youngest player to ever score in the HockeyAllsvenskan at 15 years, 328 days.

Ekberg's performance at the 2025 U18 World Championship further solidified his status as a promising prospect. He led the tournament with 10 goals and 8 assists, totaling 18 points, and helped Sweden win a silver medal. His 18 points surpassed the previous Swedish record of 16 points, held by William Nylander and Otto Stenberg. He was named the tournament MVP, selected for the media all-star team, and recognized as the best forward by the IIHF Directorate.

Elite Prospects describes Ekberg as a "cerebral tactician" and an "offensive-minded playmaking forward". He demonstrates anticipation, awareness, quick hands, shifty footwork, and excellent speed, making him a dynamic offensive player. He can read the play, anticipate its flow, and time himself effectively. Ekberg consistently finds passing lanes in the offensive zone and knows his next play before the puck even touches his stick.

Before the start of the 2025-26 season, Ekberg was named to the Hurricanes' 2025 Prospect Showcase roster.

While Ekberg possesses high-end offensive skills, there are areas for improvement. Scouts have noted that he needs to add strength to handle tougher matchups and improve puck control under pressure. His defensive engagement also requires development, as he can sometimes be reactive and struggle with body positioning in his own zone.

Overall, Filip Ekberg projects as a top-nine NHL winger with power play potential. If he can address the concerns about his effort and awareness away from the puck, he has the potential to become a top-six forward. His combination of offensive IQ, puck skills, and international production make him an intriguing prospect for the Carolina Hurricanes.
