In a thrilling encounter at the Asia Cup 2025 in Rajgir, India edged out Japan with a 3-2 victory, securing their place in the Super 4s. Harmanpreet Singh's brace and Mandeep Singh's early goal proved crucial for the hosts, who had to withstand a late comeback attempt from Japan.

India started the match strongly, with Mandeep Singh displaying exceptional stick skills to score in the 4th minute. Sukhjeet's assist from the left flank set up Mandeep who made no mistake in converting the chance. Just a minute later, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to double India's lead, showcasing his composure and lethal finishing. India dominated the first quarter, maintaining possession and applying constant pressure on Japan.

Japan regrouped during the break and started to grow into the game. Their efforts paid off in the 38th minute when Kawabe Kosei scored, reducing India's lead. However, Harmanpreet Singh once again stepped up, converting another penalty corner in the 45th minute to restore India's two-goal advantage.

The final quarter saw Japan mount a late comeback. Kawabe scored again in the 59th minute, making it a tense finish. India's captain, Harmanpreet Singh, received a yellow card late in the game, forcing India to finish the match with 10 men. Despite the late pressure and a man down, India managed to hold on to their narrow lead and secure the win. Goalkeeper Suraj Karkera, who replaced Krishan Pathak in the final quarter, made some crucial saves to deny Japan an equaliser.

With this victory, India topped Pool A and sealed their spot in the Super 4s. India had previously defeated China 4-3 in their opening match of the tournament. Japan, who came into the match after a 7-0 victory over Kazakhstan, will now have to battle it out with China for a place in the Super 4s.

India's coach, Craig Fulton, had emphasized the need for quick corrections after their shaky performance against China, where they conceded six penalty corners. The team showed significant improvement against Japan, displaying better possession and defensive skills.

Harmanpreet Singh's performance throughout the tournament has been exceptional, making him the tournament's top goal scorer. His ability to convert penalty corners under pressure has been a major asset for India. Mandeep Singh's early goal also proved crucial in setting the tone for India's victory.

The Asia Cup 2025 holds significant importance as the winner will secure a direct spot in the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. India are aiming for their fourth Asia Cup title and their second on home soil.
