Chandigarh schools will remain closed on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025, due to inclement weather conditions. This decision follows a similar closure on Tuesday, September 2nd, as the region experiences heavy rainfall. The Director of School Education announced the closure in a press release, prioritizing the safety of students amidst the ongoing weather disruptions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued alerts for heavy rainfall in Chandigarh and surrounding areas, leading to concerns about waterlogging and localized flooding. Chandigarh has already received over 140 mm of rainfall since Sunday. The heavy downpour has raised concerns about the Ghaggar river, which is flowing close to the danger mark in some areas of Punjab.

Several other regions in North India are also experiencing school closures due to heavy rains and flooding. In Punjab, schools and colleges are closed until September 3rd. The Punjab government had initially announced closures on August 27th due to floods in 12 districts. Similarly, schools in Noida and Ghaziabad will also remain closed on Wednesday because of the heavy rain. The Jammu and Kashmir board of school education (JKBoSE) has postponed all exams for classes 10 and 11 scheduled for Wednesday.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has activated its emergency control room and is warning of potential traffic disruptions due to waterlogging in several sectors. The IMD has issued an orange alert for the region, advising residents to take necessary precautions as the monsoon remains active. With the soil already saturated from previous rainfall, there is an increased risk of urban flooding.

In light of the weather conditions, the education department has urged parents to ensure that children stay indoors and avoid going near swollen drains and rivers. While schools are closed in Chandigarh on Wednesday, teachers may be required to report for non-teaching duties, according to a notification from the Deputy Commissioner.
