K. Kavitha, daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), has resigned from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and her Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) post. This decision comes a day after she was suspended from the party for alleged "anti-party activities". Her resignation is effective as of September 3, 2025.
Kavitha, a former MP from Nizamabad, addressed the media in Hyderabad, stating that she was resigning from both the party and her MLC position and submitting her resignation to the Speaker and KCR. She also alleged a conspiracy against her by a section of BRS leaders, claiming that some leaders within the party are hostile towards her and that wrong cases had been filed against her. Kavitha's term was set to expire next year.
Kavitha's suspension stemmed from her public criticism of senior party leaders, including her cousins T. Harish Rao and J. Santosh Rao. This outburst was reportedly triggered by the Congress-led Telangana government's decision to hand over the probe into alleged irregularities in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). KLIP was a flagship project of the BRS regime.
Kavitha's decision highlights the deep divisions within the BRS, escalating a long-simmering family and intra-party feud that has gripped Telangana's political landscape. These divisions have become more apparent months after the BRS's defeat in the 2023 assembly elections.
