The West Bengal Assembly witnessed high drama on Thursday, September 4, 2025, when BJP chief whip Sankar Ghosh was marshalled out of the House following his suspension. The suspension and subsequent events unfolded during a discussion on a government resolution concerning alleged atrocities against Bengali migrants.
The trouble began when BJP MLAs started raising slogans, questioning the suspension of Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, which had occurred on September 2. Sankar Ghosh joined in the protest, leading to his suspension for the remainder of the day by Speaker Biman Banerjee for creating a ruckus. The Speaker stated that Ghosh was suspended for creating disorder during the discussion.
Ghosh refused to leave the House following his suspension. As a result, assembly marshals were called in, and he was physically removed from the premises.
Following the chaotic scenes and his removal, Ghosh reportedly fell ill and his health deteriorated. Fellow legislators assisted him, and he received medical attention.
The events leading up to Ghosh's suspension involved heated exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches, with both sides engaging in sloganeering. Marshals stood guard between the groups to prevent physical altercations. Amidst the uproar, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul was also suspended and removed from the assembly after shouting slogans. Reports also emerged of BJP legislators alleging that water bottles were thrown at them from the treasury benches during the commotion.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the BJP MLAs for what she termed "unparliamentary conduct," accusing them of attempting to derail a serious debate regarding the rights and safety of migrants. The chaotic scenes led to multiple adjournments. Despite the disruptions, the House was not adjourned for the day.
